Field Course: Ancient Civilization and Unique Wildlife of Greece


The programme has been designed by a group of expert educators and scientists specializing in history, archaeology and environment sciences, and fully covers the educational objectives associated with the students’ participation.

The programme’s duration will range between 5-20 days depending on your selection of specific modules/topics, and will take place in Athens and/or on the Greek island of Samos, according to the location of the particular activities.

The organizing institutions supporting the programme, and responsible for the quality of its design and implementation are:

The education organization DIAN ( which has a long experience and successful track record in organizing and implementing education/training activities in Greece and abroad, within the framework of EU programmes or in direct collaboration with other institutions/experts.


“Archipealgos” Institute of Marine Conservation (, a leading non-profit environmental organization with a 15-year experience in pioneering environmental research projects, and organizing research/training activities and field courses for high school, undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Inland transportation shall be undertaken by a tour operator with a long relevant experience.

Along the framework of the programme, 20 different daily activities are offered, among which each school may select this of particular interest for its students and accompanying teachers. A separate cost analysis per activity is provided, to enable the calculation of the total cost of the programme.


Daily activities include:

  • History/archaeology activities: Visits and guided tours to more or less known museums and archaeological sites in Athens and surrounding regions.
  • Environmental activities: Acquaintance with and participation in research actions and the recording of the unique natural environment of Samos Island. There, students may take part in the recording of rare species, such as chameleons and jackals, recording of birds as well as dolphins and the underwater ecosystems.
  • Acquaintance with the ancient history of the island of Samos, which started in 3.000 BC and is the birthplace of a number of important scientists of the ancient world, such as the mathematician Pythagoras, philosopher Epicurus, astronomer Aristarchus and the engineer Efpalinus. Visits to local schools and participation in joint activities with local teachers and students.
  • Introduction to traditional music and folk dances of Greece, and instruction of the best known ones.
  • Introduction to the Mediterranean diet and its benefits.


The programme also includes:

  • Pre-information of students (before travelling to Greece) on their selected activities, in order for them to be prepared on the areas of activity and places they will visit. The pre-information will start at least 2 months before the visit and be completed prior to their arrival to Greece.
  • A basic e-learning course in the Greek language will be offered, to enable students to conduct basic communication in Greek.
  • Regular information after the departure of students from Greece in the form of bi-monthly newsletters, on their topics of interest.
  • Ability to communicate with students of other schools who have visited Greece, to exchange information and experiences from their visit. Communication shall take place through DIAN’s electronic platform.
